By India Today Web Desk: The Centre’s decision to rename Rashtrapati Bhavan’s famous Mughal Gardens as Amrit Udyan has triggered criticism from the Opposition. While some parties regarded the move as an attempt to divert the public’s attention from issues nationwide, others took a swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government. Meanwhile, the BJP said the decision was made to shun shreds of India’s colonial past and symbols.

Speaking about the renaming of the iconic gardens in Delhi, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav mentioned Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s decisions in the state.

Chhote miyan to chhote miyan, bade miyan Subhan Allah. Our UP CM is changing the stadium’s name where the match is being held today, where he took the oath. It was built in the name of Lord Vishnu, he changed it to the name of Atal Bihari but did not do any work in the name of Atal ji,” Akhilesh Yadav told India Today.

Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien hinted that the Centre’s decision was aimed at upholding the BJP’s, moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s supremacy.

“Who knows, they (the Centre) might now want to rename the Eden Gardens (in Kolkata) and call it Modi Gardens! They should focus on creating jobs, controlling inflation and protecting the precious resources of LIC and SBI,” News agency PTI quoted Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien as saying.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary D Raja said it was the BJP-led Centre’s trend of renaming locations and ‘no one knows when it will end’.

“The RSS’s agenda is to rewrite Indian history and redefine nationhood. When we celebrate our Republic, it is for the people to stand up and safeguard our secular, democratic Indian Republic. India is not a theocracy, India is a democracy,” CPI’s Raja told PTI.

Meanwhile, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar in a jibe at the Centre said, “Waiting for Mughlai Paratha to be renamed Swarga Lok or Indra Lok Paratha.”

Congress’s Imran Pratapgarhi said, “Adani’s shares were falling and the credibility of the government too. Giving immediate relief to this most troubled public, the government has changed the name of Mughal Gardens to Amrit Udyan.”

The BJP, on the other hand, backed the decision and said it was a sign of ‘progress’. Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said, “Our hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji sets an example by renaming the iconic gardens at the President House as ‘Amrit Udyan.’ A powerful symbol of our nation’s progress and a reflection of a brighter future for New India.”
