Jharkhand actor’s spouse held for her murder, had spun robbery tale | Kolkata News

[ad_1]

HOWRAH: The husband of slain Jharkhand actor-YouTuber Riya Kumari was arrested early Thursday and charged with murder, destruction of evidence, torture and criminal conspiracy, hours after he allegedly spun a story about his wife being shot and killed while accosting unidentified armed men who had tried to rob him at gunpoint on NH-16 near Kolkata.
Jaiprakash Kumar Rajni, alias Prakash Albela, was travelling to Kolkata from Ranchi by car with his 32-year-old wife and their 27-month-old daughter. The shooting took place at Bagnan in Howrah district.
Prakash allegedly kept changing his statements during interrogation, leading police to arrest him. Forensic evidence such as remnants of a bullet head, brain matter and an unusual amount of blood in the family’s hatchback apparently bolstered their suspicion that Riya’s husband was hiding something.
She was tortured for dowry: FIR
The brother of murdered Jharkhand actor-YouTuber Riya Kumari, Ajay Rana, reached Howrah and filed a complaint against her husband Prakash, the latter’s first wife Sharada and his two brothers Sandip and Akash Kumar. An Uluberia court remanded Prakash in police custody for 12 days.
While being taken to court, Prakash told reporters, “I cannot kill my wife. I have a daughter.”
On the way out, he said, “The panchayat ruled that I spend time alternately with my two wives (Riya was his second wife). There was a marital problem, but that was resolved. I have two sons from my earlier marriage. I didn’t kill Riya.”
The FIR, a copy of which is with TOI, quotes complainant Ajay as saying his sister used to be tortured and threatened by her husband for more dowry after their marriage a decade and a half ago.
Riya’s brother also told police that Prakash was in debt and owed around Rs 28-30 lakh. Riya had life insurance policies, fixed deposits and share certificates of Rs 20 lakh and around Rs 10 lakh in her bank account, he said.
Ajay alleged that a week ago, Prakash left the couple’s home in Ranchi’s Tiger Hill Apartment, only to return just before the Kolkata trip and apologise for his behaviour. He claimed Prakash lured Riya to Kolkata on the pretext of shopping and with murder on his mind.
Prakash attributed his marital discord to Riya’s allegedly flashy lifestyle, her male friends and late-night parties. He said the Kolkata trip was planned to try and resolve their differences. He insisted that three unidentified men shot his wife dead after he stopped their car around 5am to relieve himself.
Howrah SP Swati Bhangalia said, “Inconsistencies in Prakash’s statement, his attempts to change statements, traces of the bullet head, blood and even parts of brain found in the car and the specific FIR against him led to the arrest. The hunt for the gun is still on.” Forensic experts who examined Riya’s body for a second time at the Uluberia hospital morgue before it was handed over to her family members told police the single bullet – possibly fired from a 9mm revolver – that hit Riya near her right ear and exited perforating her temple indicated she was asleep when she was shot, police sources said. The spot where Prakash claimed he and Riya were accosted by robbers is under CCTV surveillance, but footage showed nothing resembling the incident early Wednesday.

Partha Chatterjee (L), Arpita Mukherjee

KOLKATA: In its probe into the “cash-for-jobs” scam, ED sleuths on Thursday revisited the Panditiya Road apartment where they couldn’t access flat 503 earlier, even as the joint interrogation of Partha Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee continued at the CGO Complex.
The ED team first went to Rabindra Sarobar police station, and then reached the flat with policemen and a locksmith. They attempted to break down the door but failed. The officers went to the association secretary, who connected them with the building’s locksmith.
Neighbours said the flat was under lock and key for around five years but added that it changed hands multiple times since the complex came up. The ED team suspects that the apartment, though registered in the name of a different person, was a benami property of Partha and Arpita.
Documents of a company in partnership running since 2012, two joint bank accounts of the company used to purchase four flats, the conveyance deed of a Santiniketan land bought by Partha and Arpita in 2012, and 31 life insurance policies held by Arpita in which Partha was the nominee were clinching pieces of evidence for ED to prove that the former TMC minister was acquainted with Arpita since 2012.
ED investigators placed the documents before Partha and wanted to know about the business transactions of the firm Apa Utility Services over the last nine years. Chatterjee, on his last day of ED custody, replied to some of the questions.

₹8cr In 11 Bank Accounts Of Partha, Arpita On Ed Radar | Kolkata News

[ad_1]

KOLKATA: After the cash seizures, around 11 bank accounts — three belonging to Partha Chatterjee and eight to Arpita Mukherjee — have now come under the Enforcement Directorate’s scanner. Around Rs 8 crore is parked in these accounts, Rs 2.5 crore of which has already been put under debit freeze.
ED sources said Chatterjee has five accounts with two nationalised banks and a private sector bank. According to his 2021 Election Commission affidavit, he has nearly Rs 60 lakh in his accounts.

Agency sources said two sets of documents have led them to suspect that Chatterjee was in “close contact” with Arpita Mukherjee for more than a decade. Officials have found several insurance policies that Chatterjee bought with Mukherjee as the nominee or beneficiary. Another set of documents pertains to a purported house procurement in Bolpur in January 2012.

“We are ascertaining the authenticity of the documents. It must be examined first before any claim,” Mukherjee’s lawyer Niladri Bhattacharya said.
Chatterjee’s 2021 affidavit with the Election Commission of India has mention of an LIC policy of Rs 25 lakh. It does not mention anything else.

The Bolpur deed, ED sources said, was signed before the additional district sub-registrar in January 2012 by Mukherjee and Chatterjee. While Mukherjee registered her address as Tower II, Flat 1A, Diamond City South, Chatterjee purportedly kept his Khanpur Road, Naktala address as his own. The duo purchased a two-storied house over 10 cottahs for Rs 20 lakh. The purported deed contains their photographs, thumb impressions and signatures.

According to locals, this property was frequented by the duo over the past several years. A person, who refused to be identified, even claimed that he had seen Chatterjee’s vehicle in this complex.
Chatterjee’s affidavit with the Election Commission in 2016 and 2021 finds mention of his Khanpur flat and a 200 sq ft shop at Netajinagar. There is no mention of his Bolpur property anywhere. ED officers said they will also approach state agencies for the registration deed and mutation details of all the properties — both belonging to Mukherjee and those owned by Chatterjee — for examination.

Mamata now set to give TMC Bengal committee a makeover

[ad_1]

Fresh from constituting a new national working committee to put an end to infighting in the ranks, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is now set for a makeover of the existing state panel along similar lines.

According to sources in the ruling party, Banerjee wants to ring in changes to the state committee and bring in fresh faces.

A senior Trinamool leader said, “Mamata Banerjee has always wanted to bring fresh blood into the party. Charing the very first meeting of the national working committee (on Friday), she said she will soon put together a new state committee which will have new faces.” Trinamool sources said current state president Subrata Bakshi may no longer remain in his post and the likes of Samir Chakraborty, Pratima Mondol and current party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh may get plum posts in the new state committee. According to a section of party leaders, Banerjee might also bring a close aide of her nephew and Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee into the state panel.

Last week, the Trinamool chairperson formed a fresh national working committee of her party in a move aimed at sending a message of unity in the ranks. A senior Trinamool leader told this newspaper, “Formation of a new state committee will also send out a message of unity between the party’s old and new guards.” Trinamool MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy informed on Saturday informed that the second meeting of the party’s National Working Committee will be held in Delhi.

Hitting out at the central government, he said, “Corruption at ABG Shipyard is a huge conspiracy. The central government wants to privatize companies such as the LIC. A conspiracy is also afoot to sell Bengal Chemicals.”
