The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch said Sunday it arrested more than 43 people and seized drugs worth Rs 1-2 crore after conducting simultaneous raids at 100 locations across the national capital under Operation Kawach.

The police said they have also identified over 64 hotspots in the city where drugs, including heroin, MDMA, ganja and other narcotics, are sold and consumed. Sources said many of the accused were targeting school and college students.

Under Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s direction, the Delhi Police are working on drug abuse, detection and prevention among young children and adults since January.

Ravindra Singh Yadav, Special Commissioner of Police (Crime), said, “We acted as per the orders of MHA and Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF). In the last five months, we have arrested 534 offenders in 412 NDPS cases and recovered about 35 kg heroin/smack, 15 kg cocaine, 1,500 kg ganja, 230 kg opium, 10 kg charas and 20 kg poppy husk”.

As per the police, 80 specialised teams were formed and field officers were directed to catch more offenders. On May 12-13, the police said, the teams raided 100 locations and arrested over 43 peddlers.

“It was a joint operation with the district police. We had undercover officers, surveillance teams, canine squads, and intelligence teams helping us. We managed to get both street-level and high-level drug dealers in Delhi,” added Yadav.

Most recoveries were made from North Delhi, Rohini, Dwarka, and East Delhi.
